Growth

Growth and Economics

A Joint Project with the Thomas R. Brown Foundations

The impact of growth has long been a critical issue at all levels of government and society. A growing economy is a good thing and generally raises the standard of living, but ironically there is often concern about the impact of growth, particularly at the local level. With growth comes change but without growth a community will not be able to raise its quality of life, including public and private services. However, growth has costs for transportation, schools, police, and fire. The question is how growth is managed in order to maintain quality of life and the natural environment of a community.

In May 2007 the Institute conducted a special program on growth for journalists. Check out the following backgrounders from the symposium:

* Understanding Growth in the West -- Complete overview of the May 2007 conference
* Perspectives on Growth -- Ann Brown, Editorial Page Editor, Arizona Daily Star.
The Communications Institute Economics Program continues to focus on growth and its impact and will offer the following programs in 2008.

* Tucson Regional Survey - February 2008, the Arizona Daily Star and The Institute conducted a survey of citizens on their desires for the future of their community. The survey is being conduct with the help of the Public Policy Institute of California.
