Symposiums

The Communications Institute has conducted several symposiums with leading academic institutions focused on issues involving risk in society including terrorism, natural disasters, and health and safety.
The Institute will continue developing this program in conjunction with leading experts on risk from such leading institutions as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Southern California, and other leading institutions.
Programs
In 2005 and 2006, TCI symposiums on Risk and Society were attended by more than 1,200 people.

*Policymakers - Programs are aimed at helping government leaders devise new strategies to deal with these issues.
*Private Business - Business leaders will play a growing role in helping the nation cope with these threats. Symposiums will help business leaders sharpen their instincts in charting their own course through the uncertainties at play.
*The Insurance Industry - Private insurers need to devise fresh plans to help people recover from disasters and encourage investment decisions - from small homeowners to large companies - to minimize risk.
*Nonprofit Leaders - The independent sector, from religious institutions to community organizations, is playing a critical role in helping citizens recover from disasters and in planning for the future. What will their future role be?
*News Media - Reporters mediate the story: They translate complex events like Katrina into words and images that the public can understand. But determining what story is the real story demands fresh insight and innovative strategies of reporting.
