Economics
Balancing of the real costs and benefits of public policy
University of Arizona Professor Price Fishback discusses economics with journalists at the June 22 program at the Arizona Daily Star.
Communications Institute's Economics Programs
A Joint Program with the Thomas R. Brown Foundations
The Communications Institute is conducting a multi-faceted project focused on heightening understanding of economics for policymakers, journalists, and leaders from all sectors.
The programs include special seminars such as one for the Society of American Business and Economic Editors led by Professor Joseph Kalt of the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. TCI is also produced a DVD that includes a discussion on the economics of energy with Dr. Kalt.
Economics is at the heart of most important public policy issues. Confronting these critical issues, therefore, requires that leaders and citizens at nearly every level of society understand the relevant economic context and content. Issues range from gas prices, health care, education to immigration.
Economics is all about dealing with unlimited needs of a society chasing limited resources. The Communications Institute economics programs examine current and recent developments in macroeconomic policy, with a strong focus on the application of the tools of macroeconomics to understanding the role of government fiscal policy and monetary policy.
The increasing internationalization of the world’s economies also brings issues of international trade and finance to the fore. Indeed, a major challenge of leaders today is to explain to the public the implications of the internationalization that is now felt throughout even the most “local” of markets and has been the focus of debates over limiting the outsourcing of manufacturing.
In the context of our increasingly globalized economy, TCI programs introduce participants to issues of inflation, unemployment, and the role of financial markets. Participants will become familiar with relevant analytic frameworks and institutions through which economic policy is conducted. Experts will present the latest economic data and discuss the key policy debates.

Objective Analysis – Smart Decisions
The Economics and Public Policy Project aims to provide policymakers, journalists and leaders in all sectors with the ability to more effectively and objectively confront critical public policy issues through the expanded knowledge in economics.
This project is sponsored by the Thomas R. Brown Foundations.
The project has three primary goals:
* Inculcating economic education principles into decision making - The program aims to expand the use of objective, nonpartisan analysis in evaluating critical public policy issues and improving decision-making. Understanding key economic principles is critical to confronting difficult policy issues.
* Economic Analysis of Public Issues - Too often, issues are cast simply as conflicts of viewpoints with little or no critical analysis of the validity of either viewpoint. New policy initiatives are often proposed without adequate discussion of economic consequences -- both positive and negative -- if they were implemented.
* Expanding the Reach of Economic Analysis – This project brings together a consortium of leading academic and research institutions to confront tough issues in order to expand the reach of these institutions to provide sound economic tools and analysis to policymakers, media, and individual citizens.

Programs
The Economics and Public Policy Project includes a series of national symposiums and regional conferences around the nation.
Curriculum covers macroeconomics and microeconomists, presented in an objective, analytical, and nonpartisan manner. Programs teach participants to think critically and expand their ability to apply economic analysis to critical issues in the nation, states and local communities. The content for programs is built around contemporary issues that attract participants to attend and become active learners. They are taught through the use of the Socratic method of teaching with leading economic scholars.
A major focus of the Economics programs will be the Governing Arizona Project and state fiscal issues. Other topics for programs include:
* Immigration
* Energy and the Environment
* Economic growth
* Education
* Health Care
* Trade

The project has resulted in the production of publications and primers focused on economics and its application to topical issues ranging from immigration to energy. Most importantly the project also includes a content for the economics section of AnalysisOnline. Each program will be co-sponsored and developed with leading academic and research institutions.
