Staff and Governance
The Communications Institute (TCI) is governed by an eight member Board of Trustees and with a support staff based in Los Angeles, California.
TCI also works with scholars from major academic/research institutions to develop programs and symposiums in order to select the best academic researchers to present current topics.
Funding
The Communications Institute is financially supported by grants from individuals, foundations, academic institutions, the private sector, and program service fees. The Thomas R. Brown Foundations provides core funding for the organization's operations. All educational programs are funded by foundations, research institutions, media organizations, and registration fees. Funding from the private sector is accepted as general operations funding and not specific educational programs.
Funders of institute programs have included the Brown Foundations, Wharton Business School, University of Southern California, Congressional Quarterly, University of Pennsylvania, RAND Corporation, Sandia National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California Energy Commission, California Endowment, Bechtel Family Foundation, and the California Health Care Foundation.
The Institute also recognizes other support for TCI programs from the Arizona Daily Star, Arizona Capitol Times, University of California Berkeley, Fresno State University, University of California Los Angeles, and Arizona State University.
